AFC Cup: Chonburi earns home right (News)

After an away victory against Home United, Chonburi FC is certain as a group winner and earned the right to play on home soil in the round of last 16. After 2009 and 2011 the Sharks reached the knock-out stage of the AFC Cup for a third time.

With his opening goal after five Minutes, Chonburi skipper Pipob On-Mo put his side on track. Ex-Home United Kengne Ludovick could have raised the score shortly afterwards but the crossbar saved for the host. Short before the half an hour mark Therdsak Chaiman then saw his attempt cleared off the line by defender Rosman Sulaiman. Home United coach Lee Lim-saeng brought in striker Frédéric Mendy right after and the home side started became more dangerous. However, both sides went into the break with Chonburi's slim margin of one goal. But Home United now played like a team, that want to become group winner.

Last day of the AFC Cup group stage and Chonburi FC have to take on Home United. Both teams are already qualified for next round. However, the game is about nothing less than who is winning the group.

Because the intermediate round is held in a one-legged tie, so without a return match, all group winners automatically earn the right to play at home, and this makes this match so volatile. All the more if you consider teams from Chonburi's group G going to face opponents from group E. All teams of the group are from Middle East and long distance traveling could be avoided. Particularly as there was mostly hardly to win something for Thai representatives in this part of the world.

Hong Kong side Citizen AA is next for Chonburi in the Thai's third match of Group G. Three points from the tie would help the Sharks getting a step closer to next round.

Despite of the long season break at the beginning of the year, things are not running very smoothly for Chonburi so far. Only 5 points out of three league clashes and four out of two in the AFC Cup, are not enough by their own standards. Though same can be said about the Sharks next AFC opponent, Citizen AA. Standing in the shade of Kitchee SC, Pegasus and South China AA, the club from Mong Kok district currently is sitting on a fifth place in Hongkong domestic league.

AFC Cup: Ludovick redeemed Chonburi (News)

Beside Buriram, Chonburi had his international appearance during the week. The east coast boys in no way have been inferior to the Thai Champ and made Wednesday a perfect day for the Thai football.

In group G of the AFC Cup Chonburi hosted Home United from Singapore. The Sharks were lucky to draw against Yangong United in the first game, the more it was important to win against a team considered as competitor for winning the group. It is vital to win the group as only the first ranked team of each group is having the right to play at home in the next round. Home United turned out to the expected heavy opponent, and the game was balanced most time.

Chonburi FC will welcome Home United from Singapore on Wednesday, in the clubs first home game of this year AFC Cup campaign. If the Sharks want to remain in the race for winning group G, three points are nearly a must.

In front of their own fans, for Chonburi it is not just about getting three points. It is also about make amends for a weak performance against Yangon United two weeks ago. With Home United from Singapore, the Sharks are host to a strong competitor for winning the group. Home United's biggest success on international stage succeeded in 2004 with reaching the semi-final of the AFC Cup. Head coach at that time, Steve Darby. Best known as assistant coach of Brian Robson with the Thai national team and responsible for Thailand's under 23 during the SEA-Games 2009. One of Steve Darby's players in 2004 was Sutee Suksomkit (today Bangkok Glass).
