AFC Cup 2010 - Al Karamah SC - Muang Thong United - PreReport (News)

After a five months break, AFC Cup action is back. On 14 September reigning Thai champ Muang Thong United will have to travel to Al Karamah SC in the 1st leg of the quarter finals. In the last round the "Qilins"  where able to overcome Al Rayyan from Qatar after penalties. Now the next "heavy weight" is waitin'.

Al Karamah SC from Homs in Syria was founded in 1928. They won the league and national cup 8-times each, while being able to win both titles 4 times in a row over the last years. Their biggest success probably was reaching the AFC Champions League final in 2006. Eventually they lost to Cheonbuk Hyundai Motors. Last year Karamah reached the final of the AFC Cup and lost it in the dying minutes of the game by 2-1 to Al-Kuwait.

Quarter finals of the 2010 AFC Cup are just a few days ahead of us. It's now nearly five months ago, that we have seen continental action in the AFC's club cup competitions. For AFC Champions League as well as for the AFC Cup. For us it means too look back what happened, to refresh our brains and to look forward to the quarters.

Muang Thong is still the reigning Thai Champion and therefore were eligible to participate on the qualification round of the AFC Champions League 2010. In the first of round of the qualifiers, Muang Thong had to face Vietnam champ, SHB Da Nang. Winning by 3-0 on away Muang Thong advanced to the next round. Next opponent came from Singapore. It was nobody else than record champ Singapore Armed Forces. And again the Thai side had to travel away. However they where able to hold on to a goal less draw and the match was decided in penalties.
