2011 AFC Cup - Muang Thong to face Ha Noi T&T in the first match of Group G (News)

It's time and midweek the AFC will start in it's 2011 continental competitions. Muang Thong United and Chonburi FC are the teams to represent Thailand in the AFC Cup. Thailand's current champion will have to kick-off it's campaign in Group G against Ha Noi T&T at the Yamaha Stadium after loosing to Sriwijaya FC in the AFC Champions League qualifier.

Ha Noi T&T is the current champion of Vietnam and the history of both clubs is similar in regards to the past years. The Vietnamese side was founded in 2006 and as well as Muang Thong, they earned promotion to second division in 2007. Ha Noi marched through the league and were crowned V-Leauge Champion for the first time last year.

With a win over Al-Itthiad Aleppo, Muang Thong put themselves in a good position for a possible next round. However the Thai side failed to make it more comfortable for them. It be become a thrilling and tight return leg in two weeks.

About 12.000 fans followed the Semi final 1st leg between Muang Thong and Al-Ittihad Aleppo from Syria. From the very first minute the reigning Thai Champ took control of the game and the first chance came through Amorn Thummanam. But his free header found his way just into the hands of the Goalkeeper. A few minutes later the hosts got their next chance, but Christian Kouakou missed it. In the 9th minute, Datsakron Thonglao passed a ball in the back of Ittihads defence, and Dagno Siaka hitted the ball home.

AFC Cup 2010 - Muang Thong - Al-Ittihad Aleppo - PreReport (News)
Topic: AFC CupThe 2010 AFC Cup semi finals are ahead of us, and Muang Thong United will have to take on Al-Ittihad Aleppo from Syria in a two legged round.

Aleppo based Al-Ittihad finished in 4th place last season of the Syrian Premier League, which didn't started yet into the new season. The club was founded in 1953 and their biggest success came in 1986, when they made it to the semi finals of the Asian Club Championship, predecessor of todays Champions League. Seven national championship trophies and 8 national cup trophies are in the cabinet of the club. Current head coach is Valeriu Tita from Romania.

Last Tuesday was a great day for Muang Thong United, and a great day for Thai football. It could be even become a big day but Thai Port FC missed the semis unfortunately.

However we have to take it as it is. And no matter whether Muang Thong will made it to the Final or not. But what both Thai clubs achieved in this 2010 AFC Cup campaign was outstanding. Yeah you may even can name it as a markable comeback of Thai football on continental level. BEC-Tero was the last Thai club, back in 2003, able to make it to the semis. That's seven years ago! Both Thai sides where the underdogs and nobody expected them to go that far. It appeared that the clubs from the middle east are just too dominant. Vietnamese side Da Nang just came up short by penalties vs Al Riffa, and Muang Thong is now joining three clubs from Arabia in the Semis.

Alongside Muang Thong, the second Thai side will be involved in AFC Cup action. As well as the reigning Thai Champ, Thai Port will have to play the 1st leg on 14 September. After they where able to beat Sriwijaya from Indonesia by 4-1 in the last round, the next opponent comes from middel east.

Opposite to Muang Thong, Thai Port will have to play at home first. Their opponent, Qadsia SC from Kuwait. The club was founded in 1960 and can be considered as the number two in Kuwait in terms of success. They won 13 national league titles so far. For the last time in 2010 and 2009. As well as in Syria, the new season is still not on his way. However, the club is not lacking of enough experience on international level. Qadsia SC appeared in the 2004, 2006 and 2008 AFC Champions League. The biggest success on international stage results from 2006 when they made it to the semi finals of the Champions League.
