AFC Champions League: Stage is set for Buriram (News)

For the first time since 2008 a Club from Thailand enters the group stage of AFC's elite competition. This Wednesday Buriram United is going to enter international stage for the first time and with the club the picturesque new i-mobile stadium.

With Kashiwa Reysol, Thailand's Champion is facing a team which could get right away win the domestic title in Japan as a promoted side in a gripping season final. This entitled Kashiwa to participate in the FIFA™ Club world championships in December 2011 and eventually losing to Al-Sadd in a third place play-off match after penalties. On his way to the semi finals, Reysol was able to beat Auckland City FC as well as Mexican representative CF Monterrey, before getting beat by Neymars FC Santos.

AFC Champions League: Chonburi in an underdog role (News)

It is Champions League time again this coming Saturday. Thailand's representative Chonburi FC is due to face an underdog role when taking on Pohang Steelers from South Korea away.

For the first time after 2008, Chonburi has the chance to reach the group stage of Asians elite competition. Of course provided a victory against hot favored Korean side of Pohang. And unfortunately the AFC wants the play-off ties to be decided in just one game. However, in principle the conditions for both teams are identical. They are still in the preparation on the new season and new signings need time to gel. Though Pohang as a host have the plus on his side in weather conditions. For Saturday, temperatures are announced around the freezing point.

AFC Champions League 2011 - Maldives instead of Seoul and Nagoya (News)

Same procedure as last year. For the second time in a row Muang Thong United failed to reach to group stage of the AFC Champions League. Which actually was on of their main targets for the season. And for the second time in a row they were kicked out after penalties.

In 2010, the Thai champion failed to pass Singapore Armed Forces in the second round of qualification. This year, they even failed in the first round. Despite the fact, Muang Thong fielded all of their star players, Sriwijaya was the better side. Kawin was back between the posts after his hand injury, Rehmann and Kallio lined up in defence and Datsakorn Thonglao pulled the strings in midfield.

2011 AFC Champions League - Muang Thong ahead of the first qualification round (News)

2011 Thai Premier League will gets on the way this weekend, but without defending Champion Muang Thong lining up. Instead of starting into the new domestic campaign, Muang Thong will have to face Sriwijaya FC in the  AFC Champions League Qualification. The now defunct Krung Thai Bank FC and Chonburi FC, were the last to play in the Champions League final stage in 2008. Both eventually missed the knock-outs.

On this weekends Saturday, 12 February, the Thai Champion will try to qualify for the 2nd round, facing Indonesian side Sriwijaya FC in an all or nothing match. Muang Thongs opponent is participating on continental level for the third consecutive time in a row. However, eventually playing only in the AFC Cup. The club was founded in 1976 in Jakarta as Persijatim Jakarta Timur and was able to lift three domestic cup trophies in 2010. Sriwijaya finished the league 8th.
